Student challenges validity of presidential debate
“Folks, do you have any idea what this clown is doing,” Vice President Biden said after the countless interruptions made by Donald Trump.
This presidential debate was characterized by yelling, interruptions, falsehoods, accusations, and conspiracy theories, all of which do not belong in a professional dispute between our two presidential candidates. More than 73 million people watched the 2020 Trump-Biden presidential debate. 73 million shocked viewers, wondering if what they had just watched was a presidential debate or a Saturday Night Live skit. To say the debate was a disgrace is an understatement. Many reporters agree that it was a “political horror show” and was even referred to as “A hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck.” The highlights of this horrid clash include many back and forth statements with no merit in the round. Phrases were thrown around as if we were witnessing an argument between two middle school students.
“China ate your lunch,” President Trump says in response to Vice President Biden’s statements about the economy.
“Would you shut up man,” Biden snaps after the constant interruptions made by Trump during his two minute protected time.
These childish phrases didn’t just occur once in the debate, but full conversations were held between the two where no progress was made. But not only was it unprofessional, it opened our eyes to the blatant racism our current president refuses to address. When asked about condemning white supremacy, President Trump simply evaded the question, throwing other groups under the bus while legitimizing the far-right and Neo-fascist group Proud Boys.
“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left,” Trump responds. This was just one of many wrongful claims made throughout this debate. He went on to spread misinformation about a plethora of causes, including personally attacking Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Trump went on to attack Biden on his education, his credentials, and had to be told by Chris Wallace multiple times to be quiet and let Biden speak. It was very clear to me that this election season is going to be very different than what we are used to. In my eyes no one won this debate truly, if I had to choose I would pick Vice President Joe Biden due to his composure and factually supported statements. However, it’s looking like America lost in the long run.
