The ideal figure of a woman has certainly changed throughout history. Society has gone from women desiring to be larger to show their wealth, to women squeezing themselves into corsets to the point of passing out to achieve a tiny waist, to everything in between.
The current trend, however, is somewhat of a combination of both of those past ideal figures. Society today acknowledges and values curves on women: somewhere between being larger and skinnier. The focus now lies mainly on the buttocks.
Kim Kardashian is one of the pioneers of this new trend, showing off her body in tight clothes and revealing pictures through social media and other publications such as magazines and tabloids.
Meghan Trainor, another woman in the public spotlight right now, has also played a large part in promoting the new body type with her song, All About That Bass. The song is an encouraging anthem to all women, celebrating larger body types, especially the booty.
Backside, rear end, rear, seat, bottom, rump, cheeks, behind, derrière, butt, booty, fanny, keister, tush, tochus, tail, buns, heinie, caboose, fundament, posterior, haunches, gluteus maximus… whatever you call it, the buttocks is all the rage. Upon turning on any radio station (besides KLRC or classical radio), you can usually expect to hear at least one line describing a woman’s body, specifically her backside.
Some may say that this new attitude towards women is crude or offensive, but I believe
it’s all a matter of perspective. I think that everyone women was created beautifully, and that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. The celebration of the woman’s body is important in boosting self-esteem and encouraging women not to be afraid to feel beautiful.
However, maybe instead of just focusing in on one particular body type, social media should encourage posting pictures of all figures, from Rebel Wilson to Emma Watson. Artists should write and produce songs about all body types and features, not just rear ends.
Anyway, it’s a relief to see that curves are in the spotlight now after being skinny was the image that every woman wanted to achieve. No more will we look at Victoria’s Secret models and starve ourselves to look like them.
Hear that, ladies? It’s our time. So eat a ton of pizza and chocolate and drink gallons of soda and stop looking in the mirror and worrying all the time. Lay in bed and watch Netflix and eat potato chips for hours and completely forget about the guilt that drives you to the gym every day.
You are beautiful, and it’s time you realize that. Regardless of the trend of the day, you are you. You are strong, you are unique, and you are beautiful.
