Springdale School District has provided its students with every possible opportunity to get a diploma. Night school is just one of the many ways students can recover needed credits to graduate.
Due to only one student enrolling for this late night study, night school has been cancelled.
According to counselor Colleen Foster, the night school program should return next semester with the chance of more students signing up. In order for night school to be offered, 18 applications, along with a fee of $100, must be turned into the counseling center by noon Jan. 20.
Night school should not be cancelled just because the enrollment numbers weren’t quite as high as desired. The cause is still the same; students need those classes or credits to graduate.
There is no financial aid nor scholarships to help students afford night school. Therefore, the school is also neglecting students who are not capable of affording the fee. This could account for this year’s and last year’s enrollment levels declining.
Cancelling night school neglects those few students who did want the education provided, but maybe instead only have the number of night school teachers that are needed on hand. Night school is a great way for teachers who need an extra buck to earn it and student who to receive that extra help.
According to Mrs. Foster, students should work hard in their classes, so they don’t need the credit recovery. If they need assistance, other options are available.
If any students fear they need night school or help getting to that graduation day, they should schedual a appointment with their counselor. The counselors can help students set a plan, so they can recieve their diploma.
