A new organization is promoting homosexual awareness, It Gets Better. This website is a safe haven for those who explain and support the decision to “come out of the closet”. It targets high school students and tells them that although times may be hard now, it does get better.
But why can’t it be alright now?
High school students are too inexperienced with real life to understand everyone in high school. The show Glee portrays a “gay” kid, Kurt, and exposes the struggles of high school bullying and the people against him.
If “It Gets Better” means high school is awful for these individuals, then what makes them go on with being their true selves. It’s as if high school makes people too scared to express freely who they really are.
In “Glee,” Kurt is afraid to be himself but eventually he comes out and is verbally and physically attacked. In season two a group of kids step forth and attempt to keep Kurt safe.
We have an anti-bullying policy, but it could be better. Everyone talks about how bullying leads to suicide, but no one has stepped forward to lead the school towards a more accepting environment.
Our schools could easily form a group or club. The club could raise awareness, they could make it so that it gets better now. We need to step up and raise action against those bullying homosexuals. It is time to work towards making it better now.
