Har-ber students in the Architectural CAD Classes with Mr. John Gore went on a field trip on Wednesday, October 18 of this year to the Walmart AMP and the skyscraper buildings around that area, as well to the University of Arkansas. They were led around by the architect who designed the Walmart AMP according to John Gore, a teacher at Har-Ber High school.
“The architect who designed it led us around and showed us features.” Gore said. “We learned about different types of concrete construction and how those buildings were built.”
This field trip gave them an insight into what an actual architect firm does and a career path they might possibly pursue. While on the tour they were shown interior design aspects of buildings for what the students may do in the future.
“It gives them a view of a potential career in architecture and what they might decide to do.” Gore said.
Junior Connor Smith, learned about planning structures of large buildings and how the architecture of the buildings in areas around us worked.
“They had to consider bearing the loads of people in the shows for the AMP,” Smith said. “The skyscrapers had to have not just space for the flooring, they had to have space between for all of the wires and supports to be able to hide everything so it looks nice from the outside.”
(Unsure of his Grade) Edwin Noe Sanchez Martinez, learned about the different materials holding buildings together. While at the University of Arkansas Martinez and the other students looked at the buildings that architects work at.
“They explained what type of material they used for walls and how the process of making that was.” Martinez said.
During the Walmart AMP portion of the field trip Martinez learned about the structure being held together by the metal poles and support beams., since it is not a complete building, and how strong it is.
“There’s not a metal part but they’re designed in a way where just a little bit holds all of it together.” Martinez said. “It’s really strong against wind and it can hold up to 120 something miles per hour in wind.”
Gore was also able to learn some stuff along with the students during the field trip. He learned about a garage design using a material he didn’t know much about.
“They’re using post-stress concrete and I wasn’t real familiar with that.” Gore said. “I was familiar with pre-stressing but not post stressing which was pretty interesting.”
