After waiting in anticipation for the VidCon awards ceremony, the time has finally arrived. Senior Jordan Mcdowell waits for the speaker to announce the winner of the editing competition. The speaker rolls through third and second place winners and Mcdowell’s hopes rise in hope of taking first. At last, the winner is announced. Mcdowell has won first in editing!
“I felt confident because I knew what I was doing,” said McDowell, “Editing is an art.”
On Nov. 4 and 5, WE-TV, (Wildcat Entertainment Television), HBWN, (Har-Ber Wildcat News), and Community Productions, boarded a bus and headed to Drury University in Springfield, MO to compete in VidCon, a video convention involving break out sessions, on site competitions, and mail-in competitions.
“My favorite part was the nervous rush of doing an onsite competition,” said McDowell, “It’s like you’re stressed and excited at the same time.”
Overall, the group won six regional awards. Junior Robert Crisp won first place in humor segment for his “Hogwarts Express.” Seniors Lindsey Coulter and Hunter Puglesea took first place for their news story “Woo Pig Lewis.” Despite not having much anchoring experience, Mcdowell also took second in anchoring. Crisp and junior Cannon Gibbs were awarded second place in onsite commercial. Seniors Zoie Piazza, Luis Gonzalez, Madison McCauley, and junior Evan Payne won third place in onsite commercial. Their commercial focused on celebrating fall with a zombie and a human girl frolicking in leaves.
“It was funny when we won because our commercial was not what they expected,” said Piazza, “I was laughing the entire time.”
Even though the students won less awards than last year, this year’s VidCon was still a success. TV productions advisor Trent Jones was proud of his students for their work.
“I makes me feel very proud to watch their pride on their face knowing they’re bringing home awards to Har-Ber,” said Jones.
