The third annual Har-Ber’s Got Talent was held Oct. 20 in the school’s Performing Arts Center.
Senior piano player Conner Doyle grabbed the title with senior Grant Gershner, who sang “To Build a Home.” The pair won the talent show and earned the opportunity to sign the trophy.
“I was pretty surprised, honestly. It’s kind of hard to successfully describe how happy and proud I felt when they announced us as the winners,” said Doyle, who also performed with other acts throughout the evening.
“Winning was a huge surprise,” said Gershner. “We both thought that the other acts did much better than we did.
The team was awarded on stage and got to sign the decorated trophy desk. They were the third winners to sign the chair. The chair is beaded with blue fabric and silver on the base. It also has a trophy glued to the desktop.
“Signing the chair was pretty cool. Although we were pretty sad we didn’t get to take the chair home,” said Doyle.
“It was an awesome feeling getting to sign the chair knowing that it will be there for a long time,” said Gershner.
Even though the team didn’t get to take the chair home with them, it is held in the choir department and their names will be forever recorded as the third annual “Har-Ber’s Got Talent” winners.
While a preview was held during the school day for $1, the actual show cost $5 and was definitely worth it.
“I really enjoyed the talent show, it was really great and the performances were outstanding,” said senior Luis Gonzalez.
Although Mr. Randy Erwin advised the students for the talent show, he did not lead it. Instead, the job was handed down to junior Alex Dudley with the help of seniors Blake Bratcher and Emily Harrison.
“It was a lot of pressure, but the satisfaction of seeing how good the show was made it worth it,” said Dudley.
The students worked for about a month to prepare for the show. They held auditions, made the posters to promote the show as well as the announcements, and found the judges. After 35 students tried out, 16 made it into the show. Five acts were featured during the preview hosted by juniors Luke Burton and Daniel George.
There was a variety of acts at the show ranging from comedy, singing, and dance. The opening act was the “Tiger” song from The Hangover, sung by Doyle and senior Alex McGowen on the piano. This team tried out only a couple hours before the tryouts were held. They had done the same thing at choir camp and just threw it together again before the school talent show auditions.
“I’ve done six talent shows, but every time I walk onto stage I get a little nervous,” said McGowen. “But as soon as I start the act, the nervousness goes away, and I’m fine.”
