Soap, Icy-Hot, sunscreen, and ice cream all have something in common: chemistry.
These simple household objects are currently being broken down and having their chemistry investigated by students in Mrs. Reynold’s Pre-AP Chemistry classes.
As a part of their final exam grade, students were required to present for fifteen minutes, showing the everyday chemistry of a topic of their choosing.
Juniors Madison Hope and Zoie Piazza presented their project on Icy-Hot, then presented on Monday.
“I learned the importance of coordinating schedules in advance for the whole project thing to work. From other projects I learned a whole bunch of random facts that will be nice to know if I ever go on Jeopardy,” said Piazza.
Her partner, Hope, agreed, saying, “when working with a partner you need to arrange exactly who does what, and when to get together or the product won’t be as good.”
Presenting projects was a huge challenge according to the rubric; however, students included all the information that was required. For Piazza and Hope, the presentation was the easy part.
“I wasn’t nervous because I don’t get nervous easily,” said Hope.
Students had to have a visual aid, a creative piece, and a demonstration or model. The project was very stressful to complete, but in the end students came out on top.
