Technical crews are the behind-the-scenes must-haves that are essential in putting on a theatre production. For the back stage crew of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the school’s most recent theatrical production, they put on their own version of the musical singing along with all of the songs.
“I sang along because I love to sing. I’ve been singing since I could talk and the alternative to being in the musical was singing over headset,” said senior Tiffany Miller, who was in charge of painting, hair and makeup.
Most of the crew got to wear headsets, so they sang to each other and talked to each other throughout the entire musical.
“Random people would talk or sing on the headsets and no one knew who it was,” said senior Alicia Turner, who helped with hair and make up, as well as one who wore a headset.
Those who participated in the back stage work found it more fun and entertaining than being on stage.
“My favorite part was that there was no pressure because we didn’t have to impress anyone,” said Miller.
“It was too fun to dance around and sing backstage with everyone. We could be as crazy as we wanted with it and on one could say anything to do us,” said Turner.
Everyone had their personal favorites that they sang along with.
“My favorite song was ‘Not One Short Day,'” said Miller. “I felt I was a part of the essence and the urge to sing was overwhelming.”
Being involved in the back stage preparation was a way to be involved without being on stage.
“I absolutely love theatre, so it was the natural thing to do,” said Miller. “Working behind the scenes makes you feel like you’re really important. Not that singing and dancing aren’t, but we worked too hard to keep the show together and have it flow. A lot of hard work went into that, and we had a blast.”
“You get to interact with all the people in the musical too. I met a lot of new people. The tech are the people who make the show run smooth. We also came out with a lot of great jokes,” said Turner.
