“Uhhhg. I am so tired of this song,” says sophomore Haylee Couch of the song “Limon y Sal” by Celia Cruz. Couch is just one of many Spanish 3 students with a song they are sick of stuck in her head. Thursday and Friday of this week, Spanish 3 students in Mrs. Ellen Rainey’s first through third hour classes are giving a lip synching performance of a song they memorized.
The purpose of the project is to learn new vocabulary and understand spanish culture better by experiencing it through music. This project has been an annual event for several years, and is definitely a popular assignment.
“I heard a lot about this project last year from older students, and it really made me want to take spanish three,” said Couch.
The project is made better by also being a competition for students to make a video worthy of being in the esteemed top ten of the year. Junior Kyle Witzigman, who is performing “Hero” by Enrique Iglesias, is definitely serious about getting in the top ten.
“We’re the best!!” said Witzigman.
Witzigman’s group, which includes sophomores Bethany Young, Phillip Weis, and Bryan Kasnicka, planned to dress up as super heroes for their epic performance. Despite the coordinated outfits,
Witzigman said, “We might be nervous, but we’ve got each other.”
Senior Katey Adams, a returning top ten veteran (last year’s third place video winner), is not going for a second round in the top ten. Quite like Couch, Adams only wants a good grade, not necessarily to out-do all other performances.
This year, Adams’ performance is a little less choreographed than last year’s winner. This year, she performed with senior Celia Gardner and junior Conner Doyle to “No Me Doy Por Vencido” by Luis Fonsi, whereas last year she did a very serious performance to “El Fantasma de la Opera.”
Adams is definitely relaxing the performance this year.
“Last year’s performance was a combination of acting and singing, but this year we’re just going to wing it and have fun,” said Adams.
For many, the project is a serious competition that requires matching outfits, elaborate choreography, and hours of work, but many see it as just another grade. However, it is overall a very fun project that involves music, dancing, and comedy.
