According to Yahoo! Sports, Super Bowl XLIX was the most viewed television program in history, raking in over 114.4 million viewers from home. For some, Super Bowl Sunday is an unofficial holiday; while others may have just tuned in to watch the commercials or Pepsi’s halftime show featuring Katy Perry.
Katy Perry kicked off the show with her hit single “Roar” from the back of a massive mechanical lion. Perry literally rode her way to center stage dressed in a fiery ensemble closely resembling Will Ferrell’s “Blades of Glory” ice skating outfit, Guy Fieri, Katniss Everdeen from the “Hunger Games” trilogy, but also a Cheeto bag. Her outfit choice inspired many laughs on sites such as Twitter and Vine.
Twitter: “@iiHercules: Why Katy Perry wearing my mixtape?”
The Super Bowl performer’s outfit was not the only topic of discussion. As Perry transitioned to “Teenage Dream”, the stage became a beach set complete with her dancers dressed up as beach balls, surfboards, and swaying palm trees. The honorable mention of the night had to go to the two dancing sharks on either side of her. The dancing sharks became an instant hit with social media, the left shark became an internet meme overnight.

Katy surprised America when she welcomed Missy Elliott to the stage and back into our hearts. The rapper performed a medley of “Get Ur Freak On”, “Work It”, and “Lose Control”. Some believe that Elliott may have even upstaged Katy and made the show worth watching. After Missy Elliot’s comeback, she tweeted to her fans.
Twitter: “@MissyElliot: the new kids think I’m a new artist &I’m bout 2blow up like Paul McCartney Lord ha mercy chile I love my sum y’all”
All three songs are as old as some of the current high school students, and with teens making up a portion of the halftime show viewers, it’s understandable that some may have never heard of Missy before Sunday night. Lenny Kravitz, rock singer-songwriter, also made a short lived appearance at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show in a duet with Perry singing her edgy first single, “I Kissed a Girl”.
“It was weird seeing Lenny Kravitz there; he didn’t get very much show time, which I thought was strange,” said Mrs. Wheeler, who tuned into the Super Bowl for the halftime show.
Perry ended her show just as strong as she started it. Perry had all eyes on her as she was maneuvered above the Super Bowl stage, standing on a minuscule platform under a shooting star. The 13 time Grammy nominee ended her performance with her inspiring single, “Firework”.
“I was watching the entire game, and I was so excited when Katy performed. She’s not that great live, but she’s still bae,” said Gabriel Loredo.
Perry’s performance was being compared to Beyonce’s 2013 Super Bowl performance throughout the night, when Queen B’s power show shut off the lights in the Superdome back in 2013. Is it possible to compare the two? Can anyone be compared to Beyonce? Why not let Katy have her moment? Perry tackled the comparison before the actual show and admitted that Beyonce was on another level in a recent interview with PopSugar.
“She’s an icon-I’m not. She’s like five notches above me, and those levels are compounded in difficulty,” said Perry to Popsugar.
At least she knows.
