Fun. began as a small, unknown, band formed by the lead singer Nate Ruess after his era with The Format ended. He joined forces with Andrew Dose of Anathallo and Jack Antonoff of Steel Train in 2008.
In 2009 they released an album entitled “Aim and Ignite,” which awarded them several fans but unfortunately gained them almost no popularity. However, when Glee covered the song “We Are Young” off of Fun.’s newest album “Some Nights,” the band exploded into fame and became the number one band on iTunes.
“Some Nights” came out Feb. 21 and is a very great album.
The album begins with the barely audible sound of a piano with “Some Nights (Intro)”. The song offers up the theme of the album and automatically tells the listeners of Fun. that this album will be completely different from the carnival sounds of “Aim and Ignite.”
The intro suggests that this album will be slightly darker and full of great music!
“Some Nights” begins with an A Cappella of all three singing that shows off how incredible their voices are before throwing an a beat that strongly reminds me of Lion King. There’s several up and downs with the beat of the song as Nate questions who he is some nights.
A little autotune is used within this song as well, but instead of making it seem like Ruess can sing, it makes it seem like his voice almost cracks!
“All Alone” is a faster beat and change from the previous songs. It’s the shortest on the album besides the intro, but that doesn’t change how great it is. If it went on longer, it just wouldn’t be the same about of awesome that it is now.
“All Alright” is a slow beginning too. Nothing on the album is truly terrible, it’s all great this one just isn’t as great as others. But it’s all alright, excuse the pun it was a perfect opportunity…
“One Foot” has a strong beat and a different sound than the others. The best part is where it slows down and just Ruess sings a bit slow. You can really hear how great his voice is.
“Stars” is the song that I consider the worst. It has the most autotune. Sure it’s interesting to listen to, but I could hit skip when listening and not regret it.
“Out On the Town” was the bonus track included for buying it online. It’s my current second. It starts with slow guitar and the trio going “oh oh oh.” It’s a pretty slow beginning, but it speeds up for the chorus.
Overall the album is amazing. The first album sounded a lot like the Format but this has changed it up. I’m really proud to say Fun. has distinguished themselves and decided on their own sound. The album is great; seriously buy it. Right now. And Aim and Ignite!
