Upcoming indie band, Freelance Whales, is on the rise to becoming the next big thing. Freelance Whales can be best described as a collection. They are a collection of different instruments, a collection of different sounds and a collection of different musicians. Their LP, “Weathervanes”, is a genius creation of everything good in music.
The major thing that sets Freelance Whales apart from any other band is that they are not guitar-driven. Though they do have the accompaniment of the acoustic guitar, they are a banjo driven band. Freelance Whales’ artistic sound comes from a variety of instruments like the waterphone and the microKorg.
Generator First Floor is a lighthearted, folk-inspired song. It’s absolutely the perfect song to listen to on a nice bike ride or a stroll along the beach. The sound of the banjo accompanied by the xylophone is enticing and draws a person into a sort of fantasy world.
As I get caught up in the song losing myself in a trance of the twanging banjo, all I want to do is simply skip around. The song is light and airy, twinkling along creating a blend of great music.
The accompaniment of Generator First Floor is the last song on the album, Generator Second Floor. Second Floor introduces the alluring harmonium and the unique sound of a watering can.
Freelance Whales most notable song is “Hannah.” The single has appeared on VH1’s Top 20 Countdown. “Hannah” shares the gleeful sound of the glockenspiel and the raspy tone of the mandolin. “Hannah” is an innocent love story saying “I’ve prepared a light show, you could fake a melody”.
Freelance Whales’ creative blend of unique instruments makes Weathervanes a captivating and striking debut album.
