Weather we like it or not, the world-America especially-revolves around pop culture, or the music, movies, TV, technology, and fashion that is popular throughout the world.
The queen of pop culture is Lady GaGa, whose unique music and fashion sense has made her somewhat of an icon around the world. Her impact is definitely noticeable, no matter how well-liked or disliked she is. According to CNN, Lady GaGa is the fifth most Googled phrase on Google.com.
Quite like Lady GaGa, Ke$ha has become an icon of pop culture as well. She spreads a love for glitter like it’s the plague, and her electro-pop dance music spreads on the internet and radio in the same fashion.
TV and movies are also a large portion of pop culture that can’t be ignored. Merchandise from movies and TV makes up entire stores sometimes, like the Disney Store, which proves that pop culture is everywhere.
The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling went from immensely popular book series to an entire amusement park in Universal Studios in Orlando, preceded by sensational movies and movie-based merchandise. The seventh movie, which was released in theaters on Nov. 19, has grossed $225,609,158 so far.
Movies that weren’t as big, such as Toy Story 3 (which grossed $414,984,497 in it’s theatre time) and Alice in Wonderland (which grossed $334,185,206 in it’s theatre time), started out in 3-D, which seems to be the new trend in movies. They were followed up by lines of merchandise to advertise and bring the movie to its fans. Now, as Christmas approaches, we still see movie merchandise on wish lists throughout America, like the actual toys for kids from Toy Story 3.
Over the summer, one of the most talked about shows was MTV’s Jersey Shore. The show (Pauly D especially) is quoted for fun by it’s loyal fans. Sayings like “Awwe yeah,” and “Cabs R here!” can be heard throughout the school on a daily basis.
A popular TV-disscussion topic this season is Glee, which combines two key elements of pop culture by taking hit songs and performing them on TV and making them available for fans to purchase on iTunes.
To connect all these elements of pop culture and bring them to the people, new technology is always being produced. The latest and most popular technology advances are the iPhone 4 and new iPod generations, the iPad, the Kindle, eReader, Nook, the Droid X, and the new 3D TV.
Technology not only connects the world, but it also allows people to view and enjoy pop culture.
